Mobile GIS and land valuation
by Jaco de Kock

MSc student Jaco de Kock has been with us in Amsterdam for some months during his MSc trajectory in 2004. Back in South-Africa, he finished his studies and graduated after a virtual presentation for the Unigis exam committee. The title of his dissertation is: 'Utilisation of Mobile GIS for Optimal Appraisals in Land Valuation and Taxation'. It "...comprises an investigation into the utilisation of mobile technology and -GIS for appraisal optimisation, which accounts for the collection, updating and management of data during 'fieldwork' in land valuation and taxtaion [...] The main purpose of the study was to explore, introduce and demonstrate the use of mobile technology and GIS to improve and optimise the quality of data management in the field by digitising the data input, control, validation and update procedures." (De Kock, 2005). The thesis describes a case-study on this subject carried out in the municipality of Almelo, the Netherlands.
