Seminar Disaster Management
Thursday, 26 January 2006, Almelo was the scene for a dynamic seminar on the
role of geo-information in disaster management. The seminar was organized by
UNIGIS and GUFO (Geo-informatie Uitwisselingsplatform Flevoland Overijssel) and
brought together geo-information coordinators from different municipalities from
the provinces of Flevoland and Overijssel, as well as students and alumni from
UNIGIS. Main purpose of the seminar was to stimulate the discussion on sharing
and distributing geo-information between the various actors involved in disaster
management.
Throughout a series of presentations, the importance of geo-information was
stressed, leading to the conclusion that good crisis management is closely
related to and greatly depends on good information management. At the same, it
was also realized that the effective use, sharing and distribution of
geo-information is still facing multiple barriers, including lack of awareness,
lack of availability, lack of accessibility and lack of appropriate
organizational structures (all topics closely related to GIS management). During
the afternoon sessions, participants discussed possible steps to overcome such
barriers and to actually bridge the existing gap between the supply and demand
side of geo-information.
The seminar has shown again that the use of geo-information in disaster
management is slowly gaining momentum and many participants showed interest in a
possible follow-up.
