Entry requirements
The UNIGIS course is a postgraduate academic course.
Students need to have obtained an academic level through previous education
and/or work experience in order to enter the course. Admission to the
Certificate, Diploma and MSc course is determined by an assessment of the
candidate’s academic qualifications, work experience, attitude and commitment to
the field of GIS. The assessment is carried out by the senior members of the
Educational Course Team, who advise the course director, who makes the final
decision on the admission.
Entry requirements for the Certificate and Diploma course
The formal entry
requirements for the Certificate (PgC) and Diploma (PgD) course are:
- A bachelor degree or equivalent
in any subject from a recognised university or higher education institution;
- Professional experience and an adequate background in GIS, geography, computing
or a related field.
In addition, the course requires students to be capable of
understanding and writing English well.
If the student does not fulfil the
requirements, he or she can exceptionally be considered for admission in the
following cases:
- The student can demonstrate substantial practical experience
in GIS or a related field, and has professional qualifications, whilst not
having sufficient degree level qualifications;
- The student does not have
professional experience, but can demonstrate sufficient motivation to develop a
career in GIS and has the required degree.
In the first case, if the student has
not graduated from a recognised university or higher education institution, a
formal entrance examination is required to enter the UNIGIS course. In both
cases, an interview will be held with the student to discuss the deficiencies. A
student with deficiencies may be required to undertake foundation studies. These
may take the form of prescribed reading or attendance at pre-course lectures.
In
addition to the entry requirements mentioned above, the entry requirement for
the PgD course is a completed PgC with no more than 25% exemptions.
Courses
start in March and September of each year. The maximum number of students per
intake is 15. If there are more candidates, students with the highest
qualifications will be admitted first.
MSc Entry Requirements
According to the Dutch Law on Higher Education, a
student can only be admitted to the Masters (MSc) course if he or she has obtained a
bachelor or MSc degree or equivalent previously. Furthermore, admission to the
MSc degree will be at the discretion of the Educational Course Team. In taking
their decision, the examination board will be guided by a student’s performance
on the Diploma course and by the appropriateness of the thesis topic proposed by
the student (students will be given advice to help develop appropriate topics).
The examination board will advise the course director. The course director will
make the final decision on admittance of a student to the MSc programme.
Normally, only those students whose average grade for the PgD is 7.5 or more
will be allowed to proceed to the MSc degree. This average grade will be
calculated as the average (rounded at one digit) of the grades (rounded at whole
numbers) from modules 1 to 8; the workshops must have been passed by the
student. The examination board can, however, in special cases depart from this
requirement and accept other suitable candidates.
